Renewed Rift Between Fubara and State Legislature
The deepening rift between the executive and legislature centres on disagreements over legislative authority, budgetary processes, and control of state governance structures, with lawmakers aligned against the governor, accusing the executive of sidelining the Assembly. At the same time, the Fubara administration insists it is acting within constitutional limits.
The House of Assembly has raised concerns over what it describes as persistent non-compliance with legislative resolutions and alleged attempts by the executive to weaken parliamentary oversight.
The crisis which stemmed from Governor Fubara’s fallout with Nyesom Wike initially peaked in late 2023 when a faction of the Assembly attempted impeachment proceedings against the governor, leading to violence at the Assembly complex and multiple court cases.
