President Tinubu Swears In Prof. Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The new INEC Chairman pledged to discharge his duties in accordance with the law and to uphold the principles of fairness, integrity, and accountability in managing Nigeria’s electoral process.

Tinubu’s Charge

President Tinubu congratulated Professor Amupitan, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver credible elections.“Approach your responsibilities with the highest level of integrity and patriotism,” the President urged.

He also encouraged the new INEC boss to strengthen the institutional capacity of the commission and ensure that Nigeria’s elections remain free, fair, and transparent.

Prof. Amupitan now officially becomes the first person from Kogi state to occupy the position. Amupitan, 58, who hails from Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA  in Kogi State, is a  Professor of Law at the University of Jos, Plateau. He is also an alumnus of the university.

Among the academic positions he has held at UNIJOS are: Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors (2012-2014) and Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008-2014). He was also Head of Public Law (2006-2008). He has assumed his current role as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos. Prof. Amupitan holds this position while also serving as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.
