More than 400,000 Nigerians have applied for the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 police constables, prompting authorities to extend the application deadline by two weeks.
The Police Service Commission (PSC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), announced that the recruitment portal—initially scheduled to close earlier—will now remain open until February 8, 2026. The exercise began on December 15, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, the PSC disclosed that while the overall response has been massive, participation levels vary widely across states.
The statement was signed by the Commission’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs in Abuja, Torty Njoku Kalu.
According to the PSC, states such as Adamawa, Benue, and Kaduna recorded a high volume of applications. In contrast, states including Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Anambra showed significantly lower turnout.
The Commission explained that the deadline extension is aimed at correcting this imbalance and ensuring fair geographical representation in the recruitment process.
Qualified candidates, especially those from states with low application numbers, have been urged to take advantage of the extended window by applying through the official recruitment portal.
Beyond individual applicants, the PSC also appealed to state governments, local government authorities, traditional rulers, religious institutions, sociocultural groups, and community leaders to actively mobilize eligible youths within their areas to participate before the new closing date.
Reaffirming its stance, the Commission stressed that the recruitment process will be conducted transparently and on merit, assuring Nigerians of its commitment to fairness throughout the exercise.
