OpenAI has announced its acquisition of product development startup Statsig in a landmark $1.1 billion all-stock transaction, marking one of the largest deals in the AI giant’s history. The acquisition, valued against OpenAI’s current $300 billion valuation, demonstrates the company’s aggressive expansion strategy as it continues to dominate the artificial intelligence landscape.

Founded in 2021, Statsig has established itself as a critical infrastructure provider for software development teams across major technology companies. The startup’s platform serves over 3,000 clients, including OpenAI itself, Microsoft, and Notion, offering sophisticated tools for feature testing, automated experiments, and rollout management that streamline product development cycles.

The acquisition brings significant leadership changes, with Statsig founder and CEO Vijaye Raji joining OpenAI as Chief Technology Officer of Applications, reporting directly to OpenAI Applications CEO Fidji Simo. Raji’s appointment positions him to oversee critical product engineering initiatives for ChatGPT and Codex, focusing on core systems architecture and infrastructure development that will support OpenAI’s expanding user base.

Simo highlighted Raji’s proven track record in building scalable consumer and B2B products, emphasizing his arrival during a pivotal moment when OpenAI’s models are “opening entirely new ways to build.” This acquisition represents more than technology integration, it’s a strategic move to accelerate safe application development and empower users with enhanced productivity tools while enabling developers to build superior products faster.

The Statsig deal follows OpenAI’s pattern of strategic acquisitions, including July’s $6.5 billion purchase of an AI device startup co-founded by Apple’s former design chief Jony Ive. With a recent $40 billion funding round completed in March and discussions reportedly underway for a $500 billion valuation, OpenAI continues to leverage its market position to acquire complementary technologies and talent.

The acquisition, pending regulatory approval, will see Statsig maintain independent operations from its Seattle office while integrating its workforce into OpenAI’s expanding ecosystem.
