Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has announced a significant donation of ₦1 billion to support victims of floods and other disasters in Mokwa, Niger State, through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
This announcement was made during a condolence visit to Minna on Tuesday, where she was accompanied by the wives of governors from Nasarawa, Taraba, Bayelsa, Ogun, Gombe, Oyo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Ekiti states, as well as wives of senators and security chiefs.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Tinubu expressed deep empathy for the affected families, describing the tragedies as “heart-wrenching.” She stated, “These are trying times for the people of Niger State, but I pray that Almighty God grants comfort to the bereaved, healing to the injured, and resilience to all those impacted.”
The ₦1 billion contribution is intended to support recovery efforts, including the reconstruction of homes and the restoration of livelihoods for those displaced by the disasters.
She called on Nigerians to unite in compassion, urging, “The strength of our nation lies in our ability to support one another in times of need.”
The visit also served as the official launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative in Niger State, in collaboration with the Tony Elumelu Foundation. As part of this initiative, 500 individuals in the state will receive economic empowerment and support to rebuild their lives.
The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, warmly received the First Lady and expressed gratitude for her generous donation and the Federal Government’s earlier intervention.
“This support will go a long way in resettling our people and restoring hope to the affected communities,” he said, assuring that the funds would be transparently managed to maximize impact.
The floods in Mokwa, which struck on May 29, 2025, have been described as one of the worst in the region’s history, claiming over 100 lives, displacing thousands, and destroying critical infrastructure.
Other efforts including a ₦1 billion contribution from Governor Bago and ₦300 million from Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, showed a collective commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis.
This initiative underscores Senator Tinubu’s ongoing dedication to supporting vulnerable communities across Nigeria through the Renewed Hope Initiative, fostering recovery and resilience in the face of adversity.
