OAU Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulgafar Oyeweso, Dies at 64

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, has passed away at the age of 64.

The respected academic and historian was said to have died on Tuesday morning at a hospital after undergoing what was initially described as a successful surgical procedure.

A statement issued on behalf of the family by Olawale Oyeweso confirmed the loss, describing the late scholar as a dedicated educator whose influence extended across academia, politics, and community development.

“It is with profound grief that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, who left this world on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at the age of 64 following a brief illness,” the family statement read.

Prof. Oyeweso, a renowned figure in the field of history and a distinguished mentor to numerous students and colleagues, was celebrated for his contributions to scholarship and public service.

He is survived by his wife, children, and extended family.

According to the family, his burial is scheduled to take place at his hometown of Ede by 4 p.m. today, following the Asr (Ashri) prayer.
