Prosecutors in Los Angeles have filed murder charges against Nick Reiner following the deaths of his parents, acclaimed Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that the 32-year-old has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, a charge that could carry a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if he is convicted.
The charges were filed two days after the couple were found dead in their Brentwood, California home, each suffering multiple stab wounds. Prosecutors also included a special allegation that the suspect used a knife, described as a “dangerous and deadly weapon.” Hochman said no final decision has yet been made on whether the prosecution will seek the death penalty, noting that such determinations are typically made later in the legal process.
Proposed Court Hearing
Nick Reiner is expected to be brought before a court to formally face the charges and enter a plea once he is medically cleared by prison officials. Although he was initially expected to appear for an arraignment hearing earlier in the week, the district attorney’s office later said the appearance would be scheduled for a later date. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the alleged murder weapon has been recovered, saying that detail would be addressed in court. Autopsies are still pending and will determine the precise cause, manner and time of death.
Rob Reiner was one of the industry’s most influential filmmakers, directing a string of iconic films including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men. Michele Singer Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and the founder of Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company.
