New Zealand Streamlines Student Visa Process with Digital-Only Applications

New Zealand Student visa

New Zealand immigration has shifted its entire student visa process online through its revamped digital platform, Immigration Online (ADEPT). Additionally, the country also plans to ease its work limits for international students.

New Student Visa Application Process

From September 18, 2025, New Zealand will no longer accept paper applications for most types of student visa categories. This includes:

  • English Language Student Visa
  • Exchange Student Visa
  • Fee Paying Student Visa
  • Pathway Student Visa
  • New Zealand Government Scholarship Student Visa
  • Foreign Government Supported Student Visa

All new applications must now be filed through Immigration Online, also known as ADEPT.

However, all applications for the New Zealand Student Visa using the old online system on or before 17 August, will be processed and such applicants can keep uploading documents or responding to their requests until they make a decision.

Changes in Working Hours for International Students

From November 2025, eligible student visa holders will be allowed to work up to 25 hours per week during study periods, up from the previous 20-hour limit.

This expanded in-study work right will also cover all tertiary students in approved exchange or Study Abroad programmes, even those on short-term (one-semester) placements.
