MTN Nigeria Gets NCC Approval to Lease Spectrum From T2 Mobile, Formerly 9mobile

MTN Nigeria has received approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to lease frequency spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited (formerly 9Mobile).

Under the agreement, effective 1 October 2025, MTN Nigeria will lease 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 15MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band for an initial period of three years.

Announcing the approval in a notice signed by Uto Ukpanah, the company’s secretary sent to the NGX on Wednesday.

“MTN Nigeria Communications Plc (“MTN Nigeria” or the “Company”) wishes to notify Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) and the investing public of the approval granted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for the lease of frequency spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited (formerly 9Mobile). Effective 1 October 2025, MTN Nigeria will lease 5MHz frequency division duplex (FDD) in the 900MHz band and 15MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band from T2 Mobile for a period of three years.” It read in part.

What it Means

The spectrum lease is expected to move MTN Nigeria’s national roaming agreement with T2 forward, allowing the Company to manage increased network traffic from T2’s customers on its infrastructure. This integrated model—combining spectrum trade and national roaming—reflects MTN Nigeria’s commitment to industry collaboration, infrastructure sharing, and advancing digital inclusion nationwide.

Commenting on the development, MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola said: “This milestone aligns with our Ambition 2025 strategy and reaffirms our commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality connectivity. By leveraging additional spectrum resources, we are enhancing network capacity in a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable way. At the same time, we are fostering a more collaborative telecom ecosystem through initiatives such as our national roaming agreement with T2 and onboarding MVNOs to drive innovation and long-term sustainability.”

In addition, MTN Nigeria confirmed it will not renew its existing one-year lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Ltd (Ntel), which covers 5MHz FDD in the 900MHz band and 10MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band across 17 states. The Ntel lease expires on 29 November 2025.
