Mattel Expands Inclusive Toy Line With New Autism-Representation Barbie

Mattel Partners With Autism Advocacy Group

Mattel Autism Doll

Mattel is introducing a new Barbie doll designed to represent people on the autism spectrum, marking another step in the company’s ongoing effort to make its toy lineup more inclusive.

The doll was created in collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, a nonprofit organization focused on improving representation and advancing the rights of autistic individuals.

According to Mattel, the partnership helped guide the doll’s design to reflect how some autistic people experience and interact with the world.

The new Barbie includes subtle physical and functional features intended to mirror common sensory and communication experiences.

Her gaze is angled slightly to the side, reflecting how some autistic individuals may avoid sustained eye contact.

The doll also has flexible elbows and wrists, acknowledging the hand and arm movements that can help with sensory regulation.

Accessories included with the doll further emphasize representation and understanding.

Each Barbie comes with a fidget spinner that clips to a finger, a pair of noise-canceling headphones, and a tablet-style communication device modeled after tools used by some people who are non-speaking or have limited verbal communication.

Mattel executives say the goal is to ensure that more children can see themselves reflected in the toys they play with.

Company leaders emphasized that inclusion in the toy aisle can help normalize differences and foster acceptance from an early age.

The autism-representation Barbie becomes part of the Barbie Fashionistas collection, which already features dolls with a wide range of physical traits and disabilities.

Previous additions include Barbies with Down syndrome, a blind Barbie, and a Ken doll with vitiligo.

The new doll is scheduled to be available immediately through Mattel’s online store and at Target locations nationwide.

The suggested retail price is $11.87. Walmart is expected to begin selling the doll later this spring.
