The Joint Revenue Board (JRB), formerly known as the Joint Tax Board (JTB), has reaffirmed its commitment to building a simpler, fairer and more coordinated tax system in Nigeria following the conclusion of its 158th meeting held in Abuja.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the two-day meeting on December 9 and 10, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, the Board said the transition from the Joint Tax Board to the Joint Revenue Board marks a major step toward strengthening revenue administration across all levels of government.

The meeting, which focused on the theme “Managing Transition: Driving Transformation, Building the Future of Tax Administration in Nigeria,” reviewed the implications of the ongoing reforms for national and sub-national revenue administration.

According to the communiqué, the Board commended the Federal Government for recent fiscal policy and tax reforms, noting that the measures have the potential to boost revenue mobilisation, enhance economic competitiveness, improve the ease of doing business and promote long-term fiscal sustainability across the federation.

The JRB described its transition as a move aimed at fostering better coordination among revenue authorities nationwide.

It said the new structure is expected to improve collaboration, deepen information sharing and strengthen tax compliance across states and the federal level.

A major focus of the meeting was the role of data in modern tax administration.

The Board stressed that the future of revenue collection depends on accurate, comprehensive and interoperable data, adding that stronger data-sharing frameworks and the deployment of analytics tools would help streamline processes and harmonise revenue practices.

The Board also raised concerns over the activities of non-state actors in the revenue administration value chain.

It called on security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Nigeria Police Force, to take urgent steps to dismantle illegal roadblocks used for the collection of unauthorised taxes, levies and charges, particularly along major transport corridors.

In a related move, the JRB reiterated the abolition of all forms of road stickers and similar instruments used by both state and non-state actors.

It urged Nigerians to resist such practices and report those involved in the issuance of illegal stickers to security authorities for appropriate sanctions.

Furthermore, the Board appealed to state governments to fast-track the passage of the Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Bill into law.

It said uniform application of approved taxes and levies at the sub-national level is critical to achieving the objectives of ongoing tax reforms.

The communiqué was signed by the Chairman of the Joint Revenue Board, Zacch Adedeji, and the Executive Secretary, Olusegun Adesokan.

Reacting to the development on social media, Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, described the communiqué as a strong signal of collective resolve by all tiers of government to deliver a more transparent, growth-friendly and efficient tax system in Nigeria.
