The 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to the Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai “for his compelling and visionary oeuvre. In the midst of apocalyptic terror, it reaffirms the power of art.”
László Krasznahorkai
László Krasznahorkai, born in 1954 in Gyula, Hungary, is a major figure in Central European literature. He is known for his apocalyptic vision, long sentences, and profound moral inquiry.
His debut novel Sátántangó (1985) portrays the despair of villagers awaiting salvation on a decaying collective farm. It became a Hungarian classic, later adapted into Béla Tarr’s acclaimed 1994 film. Susan Sontag hailed him as a “master of the apocalypse.” This was after The Melancholy of Resistance (1989), a dark allegory of chaos and authority set in a small town visited by a mysterious circus.
War & War (1999) follows an archivist’s desperate journey from Hungary to New York to preserve a lost epic. This novel exemplifies Krasznahorkai’s trademark flowing syntax. His later Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming (2016) and Herscht 07769 (2021) continue his exploration of delusion, decay, and moral confusion. They blend satire and tragedy.
Turning eastward, he created meditative works inspired by China and Japan, notably A Mountain to the North… (2003) and Seiobo There Below (2008), stories on beauty, art, and transcendence arranged in a Fibonacci pattern. His novella Spadework for a Palace (2018) humorously revisits literary obsession in Manhattan. Together, these works cement Krasznahorkai as a visionary chronicler of spiritual and cultural collapse and the redemptive power of art.
