Hamas has fired a series of rockets towards Tel Aviv today, on October 7.
Today marks the first anniversary of the deadly assault by the group that killed over 1,100 Israelis last year. Memorials are being held across Israel to honour those lost in the 2023 attacks, with ceremonies attended by victims’ families and government officials.
The October 7, 2023 attacks were a coordinated assault by Hamas on several targets across Israel.
The violence began early in the morning when Hamas militants breached Israel’s border, launching rockets and carrying out attacks in multiple towns.
Israeli authorities were caught off guard as the militants struck a music festival, leaving around 370 dead and others taken hostage.
In all, more than 200 persons were abducted and over 1,100 Israelis were killed. This event, which is still among the deadliest in recent Israeli history, has sparked a violent cycle that is still affecting the area.
Since last year, Israeli forces have carried out numerous airstrikes across Gaza, targeting what they describe as Hamas and other militant positions.
On this year’s anniversary, the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza saw the resumption of bombardment, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 Palestinians, nine of them children.
Thousands of Gaza residents have been displaced due to the attacks, with casualties rising daily. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, as hospitals struggle to manage the inflow of wounded civilians and resource shortages.
Israeli forces have also intensified their operations in southern Lebanon, concentrating on Hezbollah strongholds.
The reason for these strikes is that Hezbollah recently attacked Haifa with rockets, injuring at least ten Israelis. Since Hezbollah is a major threat to Israel, the country is prepared to block any efforts by the organization to undermine its northern border.
The scale of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached alarming levels. Since the 2023 conflict began, reports from Aljazeera indicate that at least 41,870 people have lost their lives, with over 97,000 wounded. Many of these casualties include civilians, as densely populated areas in Gaza become targets for Israeli airstrikes.
The international community has expressed concern over the rising death toll, urging both sides to exercise restraint and prioritize the safety of civilians. Meanwhile, Gaza’s hospitals are overwhelmed, with critical medical supplies running low and thousands of displaced families seeking shelter in UN facilities.
The conflict has prompted responses from leaders and humanitarian organizations worldwide. Calls for ceasefire agreements and peace talks have emerged from the United Nations, European Union, and neighbouring countries.
Despite these efforts, both Israel and Hamas remain firm in their respective stances, with neither side showing a willingness to negotiate.
The U.S. and other Western allies have continued to support Israel’s right to defend itself, although they have also urged caution to avoid further civilian casualties. On the other hand, several Middle Eastern countries have voiced support for the Palestinian cause, condemning Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
Whether or not the situation escalates or de-escalates will be determined in the upcoming weeks.
