In a move set to impact millions of road users across Nigeria, the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has announced a nationwide increase in the cost of motor vehicle and motorcycle number plates, as well as driver’s licences. The revised pricing will take effect from Sunday, June 8, 2025.

According to the announcement jointly issued with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the price adjustments are due to the introduction of enhanced security features in both the number plates and driver’s licences, alongside a rise in production costs.

For motorists, a 3-year motor vehicle driver’s licence will now cost ₦15,000, while a 5-year licence will be ₦21,000. Tricycle and motorcycle riders will pay ₦7,000 for a 3-year licence and ₦11,000 for 5 years.

The new fees for number plates include ₦30,000 for standard private and commercial vehicle plates, ₦90,000 for articulated vehicle plates, and ₦100,000 for dealer plates. Fancy number plates will cost ₦400,000, while “out of series” plates are pegged at ₦150,000.

Motorcycle number plates are now ₦12,000, with government standard motorcycle plates priced at ₦20,000 and fancy versions at ₦50,000.

The JTB, Nigeria’s apex tax coordination body, urged the public and all Motor Vehicle Licensing Authorities (MLAs) to comply with the new rates. The board also warned Nigerians to avoid touts and to ensure payments align with the approved rates.

Vehicle owners can access more details and apply for driver’s licences and number plates through the FRSC website (www.frsc.gov.ng) or the National Vehicle Identification System portal (nvis.frsc.gov.ng).
