Ghanaian President John Mahama has nominated Kojo Choi, also known as Attah Kojo Choi, a naturalized Korean, as Ghana’s Ambassador-designate to the Republic of South Korea.
Who is Kojo Choi
Kojo Choi is a 47-year-old Korean who moved to Ghana at the age of 14 and later became a naturalized citizen. He had most of his formal education in Ghana.
Choi studied at the University of Ghana (UG) from 1999-2002 for a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration. He also studied at SOS International College for his International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in Swahili from 1994-1999.
Kojo is the President and Board Chairman of the popular payment processing company, Payswitch Limited, a company he established in 2016. Payswitch works with international card schemes and mobile money operators in Ghana by providing alternative payment processing services to Banks and Non-Banking Financial Institutions.
The Company’s solution is internationally certified and hosts a total of 168 Banks out of which 70 are National Banks across the globe. They are also certified to issue Visa and Master cards.
Other Businesses
Kojo Choi holds stakes in NanaTel Limited, an MTN Ghana’s authorized distributor, Mobile Money management, customer care, among others, for Eastern and Volta Regions of Ghana. He left Ghana briefly to work in Kenya and try to open a business there but returned to Ghana after 4 months stay.
Ghanaian Public Service
In 2018, following the years of support given to the Ghana Winter Olympic team, Kojo was made the Deputy Head of Mission of Ghana’s Olympic Committee to Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Kojo’s entrepreneurship journey begun in 1994 as a student intern at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) where he proposed to management of his will to supply Korean equipments for the revamp of the refinery. Kojo revealed recently that he has witnessed every election in Ghana under the democratic dispensation of the 4th Republic.
He is said to be a proud Ghanaian, seen Ghana as his true home despite not been his birthplace. K Kojo is married with 6 children.
New Responsibilities
Choi is expected to play a key role in fostering trade, investment, and technology partnerships between Korea and Ghana. Being a Ghanaian-Korean, Kojo’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance bilateral cooperation, especially in digital finance and infrastructure development.
