Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State. He will run on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking during an interview with DCL Hausa on Monday, Malami said he had “agreed to contest” and vowed there would be “no retreat.” He expressed confidence that “the people of Kebbi are with us” once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifts restrictions on open mobilisation.
He framed his bid as a response to deepening insecurity and economic hardship in the North. Malami accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he quit in July 2025, of worsening living conditions. He also mentioned they abandoned farmers to bandit attacks. These attacks have forced many from their land and crippled food production.

Malami lamented the closure of rice mills that had operated for about two decades. He blamed “bad policies that favour foreign companies” and what he described as negligence and policy failure by both state and federal authorities. He said his ambition is driven by a desire to “salvage Kebbi State.” Malami aims to restore security, rebuild the agricultural sector and protect the welfare of residents. He insisted that his campaign is “not for personal gain but a rescue mission.”
Malami’s declaration comes months after he defected from the APC to the ADC, a move he said followed “wide consultations and deep personal reflection” and was motivated by love for the country and concern over the daily hardship faced by Nigerians.
