Former Abia State governor and senator, Theodore Ahamefule Orji, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Orji, the third democratically elected governor of Abia State, served as senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023. Although he announced his retirement from active politics several months ago, he did not at the time formally relinquish his membership of the PDP.
Political observers note that the defection had long been anticipated, particularly following the earlier exit of his son, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, from the PDP. Chinedum Orji, a former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, had cited internal crises within the party when he moved to the APC, an action widely seen as a precursor to his father’s eventual decision.
Despite maintaining a largely low public profile since leaving the Senate, Senator Orji has now formally aligned himself with the ruling party, confirming weeks of speculation within political circles.
Confirming the development, Orji’s media aide, Mr. Ifeanyi Umere, described the defection as a personal decision, adding that no official reason was given for the move.
Senator Orji’s departure is viewed as a significant setback for the PDP in Abia State, where he has long been regarded as a key power broker, financier, and rallying figure.
While some stakeholders have welcomed the move as evidence of the APC’s growing influence and consolidation in Abia, others warn that it could significantly undermine the PDP’s chances of reclaiming political dominance in the state.
