FirstBank Group, Nigeria’s premier financial institution, has officially commenced construction of its new headquarters in Eko Atlantic City, Lagos.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, marked the beginning of an ambitious project that will see the erection of a 43-storey edifice, poised to become Nigeria’s tallest commercial office building.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the certificate of approval to FirstBank during the event, signaling the green light for immediate construction and underscoring the state’s support for this transformative development.

A Vision of Innovation and Sustainability

FirstBank has described the project as an “engineering and environmental marvel,” designed to set a new benchmark for the financial services sector in Africa.

The state-of-the-art building will integrate cutting-edge technology with eco-friendly construction practices, earning it a green certification that aligns with global sustainability standards.

This focus on reducing operational costs while promoting environmental responsibility positions FirstBank as a trailblazer in sustainable banking across the continent.

The skyscraper’s sophisticated design complements Eko Atlantic City’s reputation as a hub of extraordinary real estate and towering skyscrapers.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised FirstBank for its pioneering role in Nigeria’s financial landscape. “FirstBank, as always, has taken the lead,” he remarked, extending gratitude to the visionaries behind Eko Atlantic City, a modern urban development poised to become Africa’s model city.

The governor also congratulated FirstBank Chairman Femi Otedola, the board, and management for their foresight, while acknowledging the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor for approving the project. “We hope you extend similar approvals to other financial institutions, as there is space for them too,” Sanwo-Olu added, hinting at the potential for further growth in the area.

The event drew an impressive lineup of dignitaries, reflecting the project’s significance. Vice President Kashim Shettima headlined the guest list, joined by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and business tycoon Aliko Dangote, founder of Dangote Industries.

Other notable attendees included Gilbert and Roland Chagoury, co-founders of the Chagoury Group, Dr. Deji Adeleke, Tunde Folawiyo, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

President Bola Tinubu, senators, ministers, and industry captains were also present, underscored the ceremony’s prestige.

Olusegun Alebiosu, CEO of FirstBank Group, emphasized the building’s role in the bank’s legacy of excellence. “We are proud to mark this significant milestone in our journey towards excellence,” he stated. “Our new head office is envisioned as a world-class structure that represents our dedication to innovation, customer satisfaction, and sustainability.”

Alebiosu highlighted the project’s potential to drive economic growth across Africa, creating long-term value for stakeholders. With a history spanning over 130 years, FirstBank continues to demonstrate its commitment to customer-centricity and innovation, bolstered by its presence in nine countries across three continents.
