In a bold move to modernize learning, the Federal Government says Artificial Intelligence (AI) will soon become part of daily teaching in Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria. The announcement was made in Lagos by Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, during the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Principals of Federal Unity Colleges.

Prof. Ahmad revealed that Unity Colleges are “fully ready” to deploy AI tools in classrooms, noting that digital learning facilities are already available in many schools, with more being provided under the new education technology reform plan.

“Teachers are being trained to understand how to use AI tools effectively. We’ve even introduced a new subject Digital Technology to prepare students for the future,” the minister said.

According to her, the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s renewed agenda to digitize classrooms, reform the curriculum, and upskill educators nationwide. FG to Launch AI-Powered Classrooms in Nigeria’s Unity Schools will be a crucial part of this agenda.

She emphasized that teachers and principals must uphold the highest ethical and academic standards, describing the colleges as “symbols of national pride and unity.” The move to launch AI-Powered Classrooms is indeed a testament to this pride.

The Chairman, House Committee on Basic Education, Dr. Mark Oseni, pledged the National Assembly’s full support for the AI integration, stressing the need for sustained funding and accountability.

“Federal Unity Colleges play a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s future. We’ll ensure they get the resources they need to thrive,” he said.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Principals of Federal Unity Colleges, Dahiru Shehu, commended the government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” urging school heads to make full use of the new digital curriculum.

“Our goal is to produce students who can compete globally with digital and AI skills,” Shehu said.

 Why It Matters

Education analysts say the move could transform Nigeria’s public education system, giving students hands-on experience with emerging technologies like AI, robotics, and coding.

If successfully implemented, experts predict it could bridge the digital divide and make Nigeria one of Africa’s pioneers in AI-driven learning.
