FG Launches Housing Fraud Reporting Portal to Curb Estate Scams

The Federal Government has launched a dedicated housing fraud reporting portal to combat fraudulent practices in Nigeria’s real estate sector. Announced by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (FMHUD) on Tuesday, the platform provides a safe and user-friendly channel for Nigerians to report scams, submit evidence, and track the status of complaints.

Accessible via https://reports.fmhud.gov.ng, the portal strengthens accountability in housing estate transactions. The Ministry stated that complaints will be jointly reviewed with professional bodies, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary to ensure prompt investigation and resolution.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, explained that the initiative aligns with the 2012 National Housing Policy. The policy emphasizes the need for stronger regulation, certification of estate developers, and robust protection for citizens against fraudulent actors in the housing industry.

He further noted that the policy calls for an efficient legal and regulatory framework to monitor housing delivery. According to him, ensuring that all professionals in the built environment are properly registered is essential to restoring public trust in the sector.

In addition to the fraud reporting portal, the Ministry also unveiled the Contract Performance and Compliance Project Monitoring System (CPCPMS). This tool enables real-time monitoring of housing projects, contractor performance tracking, and centralized management of project documentation, payment certificates, and Bills of Quantities.

Dr. Marcus Amiolemen, Deputy Director and Head of the ICT Department, emphasized that both platforms showcase the Ministry’s dedication to protecting citizens and improving service delivery. He revealed that the fraud portal was developed in partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure effective case tracking and follow-up.

The launch featured demonstrations by technical consultants, Messrs Freestone Investments Limited and Messrs Prunedge Development Technologies Limited, reinforcing the government’s resolve to end housing fraud. The Ministry stressed that offenders found guilty of fraudulent practices in housing estates will face the full weight of the law.

This initiative builds on previous reforms, such as the Renewed Hope Housing Online Portal introduced in May 2024, which manages sales under the Renewed Hope Cities and Estate Programme. That platform allows citizens to register, search for homes, and access flexible mortgage options, while the new fraud portal adds a vital layer of transparency to Nigeria’s real estate industry.
