EKEDC Launches “Free Meter February” Initiative for Unmetered Customers in Lagos Island, Lekki

The electricity distribution company also issued a strong warning against extortion, stressing that customers should not pay any money to obtain meters

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has announced a “Free Meter February” initiative aimed at providing electricity meters at no cost to eligible unmetered customers within  the Islands and Lekki districts of Lagos State.

This is part of efforts to close the metering gap and improve transparency in electricity billing.

EKEDC stated that customers who qualify for the scheme are required to visit their respective district or zonal offices to update their records in order to benefit from the free meter installation.

The electricity distribution company also issued a strong warning against extortion, stressing that customers should not pay any money to obtain meters under the initiative. It urged customers to report any staff or third parties demanding payment.

“Customers are advised to report any case of extortion,” EKEDC said, providing a dedicated whistleblowing email and hotline for complaints.

The programme aligns with broader industry efforts to increase metering penetration, reduce estimated billing disputes, and enhance customer confidence in Nigeria’s power sector.
