Edo state Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has banned all transport unions and a private firm, Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd, from collecting any form of revenue in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, by Secretary to the Edo State Government (SSG) Umar Ikhilor, it was noted the affected groups no longer have the authority to collect levies, taxes, or dues from motorists, traders, or the public.
The state government cited resurgent illegal collections by transport unions operating under “misleading pretenses,” accusing them of intimidation, extortion, and harassment of drivers and traders. S
“As a result, the state government has immediately banned NURTW, RTEAN, ANNEWAT, Drivers on Wheel, and Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd from all revenue‑related activities across Edo.
“Credible reports show that Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd and its operatives engaged in serious abuse of power, leading to widespread public extortion.” Ikhilor said.
The SSG described the unions’ activities as economic sabotage and a grave threat to law and order, adding that the government would no longer tolerate any form of revenue collection outside official channels.
Key measures announced include:
- Indefinite suspension of all union revenue operations pending further directives.
- Strict prohibition on collecting cash or levies from motorists and traders statewide.
- Enforcement by security agencies, with arrests and prosecutions for any violations.
Citizens have been urged to report illegal revenue collection directly to the Edo Special Task Force, led by SP Michael Anetor, via 0803 815 7126 for prompt action as any violation would be treated as a criminal offence.
