The Ebonyi State Government has approved a ₦150,000 Christmas bonus for civil servants across the state, as part of efforts to ease financial pressure on workers during the festive season.
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru announced the decision on Sunday while addressing worshippers at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki.
He said the bonus would be paid to all categories of civil servants without exception and disbursed ahead of Christmas.
According to the governor, the gesture reflects his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, even in the face of limited state revenue and broader economic challenges affecting households nationwide.
He noted that rising living costs and economic uncertainty informed the decision to prioritize public servants, describing them as critical to the effective functioning of government.
Beyond the bonus, Governor Nwifuru also spoke on the forthcoming local government elections in the state, pledging a transparent and fair process.
He stressed that his administration would not interfere in candidate selection and that he had no preferred aspirants.
The governor further reminded political appointees intending to contest in the elections that they must resign their positions in line with electoral laws, emphasizing that his office would not handpick local government chairmen or councillors.
The announcements signal the state government’s attempt to balance economic relief for workers with assurances of democratic openness as the year draws to a close.
