US President Donald Trump has launched a $499 Trump-branded mobile phone service that will rely on wireless networks and hardware that is “made in America.”
Trump’s sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., unveiled the phone service on Monday at Trump Tower in New York as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of President Trump’s announcement that he would run in the 2016 presidential election.
“We are going to be introducing an entire package of products where people can come and they can get telemedicine on their phones for one flat monthly fee, roadside assistance on their cars, unlimited texting to 100 countries around the world.
“We’ve partnered with some of the greatest people in the industry to make sure that real Americans get true value from their mobile carriers,” Trump Jr. said.
The $499 Trump smartphone is set to launch in September as an alternative to major telecom providers. Trump Mobile service will offer a $47.45-per-month plan that includes unlimited talk, text, and data, as well as roadside assistance and a “Telehealth and Pharmacy Benefit,”.
This is in addition to the sales of a “T1” smartphone, which appears to feature a gold-colored metal case etched with an American flag. The new mobile venture will include call centers based in the United States and phones made in America, according to the company’s website.
Both the name of the wireless service — “The 47 Plan” — and its monthly price are references to Trump, who was the 45th U.S. president during his first term in office and is now serving as the 47th.
The new smartphone venture is the latest venture carried out by Trump’s business empire, “The Trump Organization,” now run by his sons. Like all its other businesses, like watches, sneakers and Bibles, the new smartphone business comprises a licensing agreement.
“Trump Mobile, its products and services are not designed, developed, manufactured, distributed or sold by The Trump Organization or any of their respective affiliates or principals,” the bottom of the smartphone company’s website reads.
The Trump Organization also has business interests in real estate, luxury hotels, and golf resorts in addition to digital media and cryptocurrency.
