Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has rolled out a free transportation scheme for residents and visitors as part of activities marking this year’s festive season.
The initiative, known as the “Xmas Free Transport Service,” is designed to ease the financial burden of travel during the Christmas period, when movement across the state typically increases.
The programme was officially launched on Monday in Calabar.
Representing the governor at the event, Deputy Governor Peter Odey noted that the free transport initiative has become a recurring gesture under the current administration, with similar services provided during Easter and other major celebrations.
According to Odey, the scheme reflects the governor’s People First governance philosophy and aligns with the theme of this year’s Carnival Calabar, “Traces of Time.”
He emphasised that the goal is to reduce transport costs, foster unity among residents, and ensure seamless movement during the festival period.
The service will cover major routes within Calabar Municipality, including corridors such as Watt Market–Scanobo and Watt Market–Atimbo.
Beyond the capital city, buses will operate on inter-local government routes linking Calabar with Ugep, Abi, Ikom, Obudu, and Ogoja.
A ferry service between Calabar and Creek Town in Odukpani has also been included.
Odey urged the public to utilise the free service responsibly and continue to support the administration’s efforts to improve living conditions in the state.
He added that the gesture complements the broader Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Residents, tourists, and participants in the Calabar Festival are expected to benefit from the initiative throughout the duration of the celebrations.
