The Italian national team has failed to qualify for a third consecutive world cup after losing out on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Azzuri who have not made it to the global showpiece since 2014 were favorites to qualify through the European playoffs but fell short against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The playoff game went into penalties after it ended 1-1 in regulation time with Italy playing 50 minutes plus extra time with ten-men following a Red card to Inter Milan midfielder Bastoni in the first half.
In the other European playoff games, Turkey and Sweden sealed their places at the 2026 world cup with wins against Kosovo and Poland respectively while Czech Republic saw off Denmark on penalties to book their place in the showpiece taking place in North America in June.
