Breaking: Atiku Abubakar Formally Joins African Democratic Congress (ADC)

Atiku Abubakar 2023 election Campaign Funds Sanwo-Olu

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially become a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in his political alignment as the country looks toward the 2027 general elections.

The Turakin Adamawa confirmed his new party affiliation on Monday afternoon through a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

He shared a photograph of himself proudly displaying his ADC membership card, accompanied by a simple but clear message: “It’s official.”

The development comes four months after Atiku tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July 2025, citing irreconcilable internal crises that had plagued the main opposition party for several years.

Political observers see the move to the ADC – a party that has recently gained attention as a potential platform for a broader coalition of opposition forces – as strategic positioning by the former vice president, who has contested the presidency multiple times, most recently in 2023 under the PDP banner.

While Atiku has yet to release a detailed statement on his immediate plans within the ADC, sources close to him indicate that the decision reflects his desire to contribute to a united and viable alternative platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming election cycle.

The African Democratic Congress, founded in 2005 and known for its progressive ideology, now gains one of Nigeria’s most prominent and experienced politicians in its fold, a development that is expected to boost the party’s national visibility and organizational strength.

Further reactions from political stakeholders across the country are still trickling in as the news continues to generate discussions within Nigeria’s political circles.
