Argentina delivered a commanding performance to defeat Angola 2-0 in an international friendly match held at Estádio 11 de Novembro on Thursday evening.

The result marked a positive outing for the world champions as they celebrated Angola’s 50th independence anniversary with a clinical display against the determined hosts.

The encounter carried historical weight, as Angola—ranked 89th in the world—sought to build on their only prior head-to-head win, a 2-0 triumph in May 2006 during preparations for their debut FIFA World Cup appearance.

This time, however, Lionel Scaloni’s side asserted their dominance, maintaining control throughout the 90 minutes.

The game began with intensity, as Angola pressed early and nearly took the lead. Forward Chico Banza forced a sharp reaction save from goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, who tipped a looping effort over the bar.

Moments later, in the 19th minute, Lionel Messi appeared poised to score from close range, only for Angola custodian Hugo Marques to produce a stunning stop at the edge of the six-yard box.

Angola held firm against Argentina’s star-laden lineup, with Banza proving a constant threat. Messi, uncharacteristically wayward, sent a side-footed shot wide from a dangerous position just before the break.

As halftime loomed, substitute Lautaro Martínez made an immediate impact, threading a low drive through Marques’ legs to open the scoring and give Argentina a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw Argentina manage the tempo effectively, limiting Angola’s opportunities despite the home crowd’s fervent support.

Zito Luvumbo came close to equalizing after the hour mark, steering To Carneiro’s low cross just wide of the post.

With the match entering its final stages, Messi sealed the victory in the 82nd minute.

After being dispossessed by a sliding challenge from Jonathan Buatu, the captain swiftly regained possession and fired a precise shot into the net.

The goal marked his 20th contribution (11 goals, 9 assists) in his last eight appearances for club and country combined.

Argentina concluded the first half with 66% possession and 1.5 expected goals (xG) compared to Angola’s 0.49, underscoring their superiority.

Scaloni, who was a substitute in the 2006 fixture, saw his team extend their strong form into 2025, recording a seventh win in nine matches.

For Angola, finishing fourth in their World Cup qualifying group (W2, D6, L2) means they will miss next year’s tournament.

The Palancas Negras have now secured just two victories in their last 10 outings (D4, L4).

Argentina will now turn their attention to defending their world title in the upcoming summer showpiece, while Angola continues to rebuild ahead of future continental competitions.
