Applications are now open for the prestigious AREF Research Development Fellowship Programme 2026/27, organised by the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF).
The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) is inviting early-career African researchers working on critical human health challenges to apply for this career-boosting opportunity.
About the Programme
The programme is designed to strengthen research skills, build international collaborations, and accelerate academic careers for emerging leaders across the continent.
Selected fellows will undertake a 3 to 9-month research placement at a world-class institution in the UK, Europe, or Africa (placements expected to start between June 2027 and December 2027).
The fellowship includes pre-placement preparation, professional development during the placement, and continued mentoring and support after returning to the home institution in Africa.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
– Be nationals of an African country and currently employed by an African research or academic institution
– Be early-career researchers (research-active postdoctoral scientists, clinicians engaged in research, or early-career academics in health-related fields)
– Be working on projects that address human health challenges relevant to Africa
– Secure commitment and support from both a suitable host institution and their employing (home) institution
