Super Eagles and Fulham FC forward Alex Iwobi has brought festive cheer to the streets of London by opening a temporary minimart called Alexpress.
Located in Canning Town, East London, where Iwobi grew up, the shop offers free shopping to about 100 families in need, along with a free turkey to help them celebrate Christmas.
In an interview with BBC Africa, Iwobi shared the inspiration behind his initiative: “In the house, I was raised in, my dad naturally just gave back. To people in Nigeria, his family, and even people in the street – he would just buy bottles of water and give them to neighbors,” he explained.
“Seeing how my mum and dad are has inspired me to give to others, whether they are fortunate or less fortunate. With my position, I feel it’s only right, with the influence I have, that I give back as well. If I can help them celebrate a great Christmas, why not?”
Iwobi’s generosity off the pitch mirrors his outstanding performances on it this season. The Nigerian international has been in excellent form for Fulham, scoring five goals and providing three assists in 17 games so far.
This isn’t the first time Iwobi has extended a helping hand during Christmas. Through his Big 17 Project, he has consistently supported others during the festive season over the years.
