The Edo State Government has announced a temporary delay in the resumption of academic activities for all public and private schools across Edo Central Senatorial District, citing prevailing security challenges in the area.
The decision comes in the aftermath of violent demonstrations in Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area, where residents protested a spate of abductions that have heightened fear and disrupted daily life.
The unrest reportedly left several individuals injured, led to the vandalisation of the Ekpoma traditional palace, and resulted in the looting of shops, effectively paralysing commercial activities in the town.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, explained that the suspension of school resumption is an interim measure aimed at addressing urgent concerns affecting the safety and wellbeing of learners and school communities.
According to the commissioner, the postponement will remain in effect until further notice, allowing the state to review the situation and put appropriate measures in place.
He assured parents and guardians that a new resumption date would be officially communicated once conditions improve.
Education stakeholders within the district have been advised to comply with the directive as efforts continue to restore calm and enhance security across affected communities.
