Onyinyechi Mark Makes History with a World Record Lift

On Friday, September 6, Mark achieved a historic milestone at the Paralympics by setting a new world record in weightlifting with a remarkable lift of 147 kg. This impressive feat not only earned Mark the gold medal but also surpassed the previous record held by fellow Nigerian athlete Lucy Ejike. Ejike’s record had long stood as a testament to Nigerian excellence in powerlifting, making Mark’s achievement all the more significant.

Nigeria’s Paralympic Success

Mark’s groundbreaking performance has nearly guaranteed Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paralympic Games, with only one lift remaining in the competition. This achievement stands in stark contrast to the team’s performance at the 2024 Olympics, where they struggled to make an impact. The Paralympics have thus far been a brighter chapter for Team Nigeria, with three medals secured, including a silver won by Esther Nworgu earlier this week. Nworgu’s silver came in the women’s up to 41kg Para-Powerlifting event, further highlighting Nigeria’s growing prowess in the Paralympic arena.

The Paralympics and Women’s Weightlifting

The Paralympics have a rich history of showcasing extraordinary athleticism and perseverance, with women’s weightlifting emerging as a prominent event. Women’s powerlifting was introduced to the Paralympic Games in 2000 in Sydney, allowing female athletes to demonstrate their strength and skill on a global stage. Over the years, female powerlifters have broken numerous records and inspired many with their performances. The event continues to highlight the incredible achievements of women in sports, reflecting the Paralympics’ commitment to inclusivity and celebrating diverse athletic talents.
