The ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris have provided Nigeria with its second medal in the 41 kg Paralympic Games event.
Esther Nworgu claims the silver medal, lifting an impressive 112 kg and 118 kg in her last two attempts.
These two lifts set two new Paralympic records on Wednesday.
Sadly, Zhe Cui of China defeated her to win the gold medal with a new Paralympic record of 119 kg.
Esther began with 106 kg and finished second, trailing Cui, who began with 108 kg, to take home the silver medal.
Nworgu lifted 112 kg in her second lift, and Cui lifted 113 kg to take the lead.
Nworgu finished in second place after achieving her best lift of 118 kg in the final round. Lara de Lima of Brazil won bronze by lifting 109 kg.
This news excites Nigerians, as this is the second medal won by the country in the Paris Paralympics Games.
Nigeria has a strong legacy in Paralympic powerlifting.
The country has consistently produced world-class lifters like Lucy Ejike, who will be competing tomorrow for the 61 kg powerlifting final, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who will compete at the +86 kg event on Sunday, the 8th of September, and Bose Omolayo, competing at the 79 kg powerlifting event on the 7th of September.
Each of these women has won several awards representing the country.
Esther Nworgu’s achievement continues this proud tradition, showing that Nigeria remains a dominant force in the sport.
The country, which had no medal in the Paris Olympics, is excited to see what more the paralympic team could bring home.
