The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms between Monday, July 21, and Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
According to NiMet’s three-day forecast, Nigerians across the North, Central, and South regions should brace for moderate to heavy downpours and thunderstorms.
In a weather outlook released on Sunday and reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), NiMet predicted early morning thunderstorms on Monday across Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna. While parts of the North will see sunny spells with cloud patches, thunderstorms and moderate rain are expected in the afternoon across Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, and other northern states.
For central states like Niger, Plateau, Nasarawa, the FCT, Kogi, and Benue, cloudy skies will dominate the mornings, followed by thunderstorms and light rainfall later in the day. Southern states, including Imo, Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, will also experience light rains by afternoon and evening.
By Tuesday, the northern region is expected to experience a mix of cloudy and sunny skies. However, states like Bauchi, Taraba, Yobe, and Kano are anticipated to receive moderate rainfall later.
The Central region, especially Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and Niger, will experience early morning thunderstorms, with rainfall intensifying in the evening.
Rain is expected to intensify in southern states, including Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, and Enugu.
On Wednesday, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, Taraba, and later in Yobe, Jigawa, and Kebbi.
Central states such as FCT, Kwara, and Niger will have rainy afternoons, while the South, including Ebonyi, Ondo, and Bayelsa, will experience moderate to heavy showers.
NiMet cautioned Nigerians to take necessary precautions, as strong winds may precede rainfall. The agency advised securing loose items, avoiding driving during heavy downpours, disconnecting electrical appliances, and staying away from tall trees. Airline operators were also urged to obtain airport-specific forecasts to ensure safety and operational planning.
To stay updated, NiMet encouraged the public to follow its official website www.nimet.gov.ng and verified social media channels. As Nigeria navigates this weather period, residents are urged to prioritize safety and monitor local updates.
