Match Report

Liverpool’s first match against a top team this season turned out as exciting as anticipated. Arne Slot called the Chelsea match their toughest test yet this season. And Liverpool passed the test resolutely as they began their difficult run of fixtures in the coming weeks. The first half of the match was highly competitive with both teams playing good football. Chelsea had the edge during many phases as initially Liverpool looked a bit flat.

The match witnessed four penalty appeals, the first saw Trent Alexander-Arnold unpunished from an in-game VAR check for stepping on Jadon Sancho’s foot in the box. Next, Salah didn’t get a spot-kick at the other end when he went down under a challenge from Colwill. Chelsea defender Colwill gave away a penalty just a minute later, though, when he kicked Jones in the shin.

Salah scored to put Liverpool ahead in the game while Chelsea was left frustrated as they had the momentum at that point in the match. Liverpool thought they had got another penalty award when Sanchez tumbled Jones. However, a VAR check overturned the decision as it was spotted Sanchez got to the ball first. The end of the first half saw more drama as Cody Gakpo had a goal ruled out for Salah being offside in the build-up. The first half ended with Liverpool leading 1-0 Chelsea.

The second half began with a bang when Jackson found the net to equalise for Chelsea. It was his eighth goal involvement in his last eight games. But Chelsea couldn’t ride the momentum as Liverpool responded immediately via Jones who scored a chip goal with great touch against a faltering Sanchez. Salah set the goal up with a sublime cross and Jones took two touches to flick it past Sanchez who should have done better.

Chelsea pushed hard to find an equaliser again but couldn’t be clinical when the opportunities were created. The match ended with Liverpool winning to make it 10 wins in 11 games for Slot. While Chelsea would rue their missed chances as they sit sixth, seven points off leaders Liverpool.
