Liverpool win and earn three points to go top of the league table. Meanwhile, there were boos at the final whistle from the Wolves home fans before clapping. There were phases of the game when Wolves looked threatening but they just couldn’t find the back of the net. Liverpool overall didn’t show their best performance today, but they must be happy with their quick response to Wolves equalising goal.
The game really kicked off with the first goal. It came with the assist of Jota who dribbled past one challenge before whipping in a cross from the left. To find Konate who jumped the highest and headed through Johnstone to give the visitors the lead. It was the only goal scored in the first half of the match, as Liverpool asserted control for most it.
Wolves got their break 10 minutes into the second half of the match. Cunha tried to play Larsen when Konate and Allision mixed up on who would clear the ball from the box. It allowed Larsen to close in and pull the ball back to Forbs. The sub missed his kick but the ball fell for Ait-Nouri, who made no mistake from close range to score. Wolves fan didn’t even get a chance to properly celebrate before Liverpool were rewarded a penalty.
Alexander-Arnold crossed a ball in from the right when Semedo had his arms around Jota, who went down in the penalty area. The referee was quick to award a penalty which the VAR confirmed. Salah took it and sent Johnstone the wrong way. It was 2-1 Liverpool in a flash. Wolves tried to get back into the game by attacking. But their final third quality was found wanting against a solid Liverpool defence.
The game ended with Mario Lemina in a distraught state as Wolves’ bad run of losses continues. On the other hand, Arne Slot has achieved the best Liverpool manager performance for their debut 6 premier league games. Liverpool now occupy the top of the league table.
