Users of the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and the iPhone 6 plus, in addition to some Samsung phones, are set to lose their access to WhatsApp following a recent update by the Meta-owned messaging platform that raises the app’s minimum system requirements, rendering it incompatible with certain devices.

The platform has announced it will stop support for several older smartphone models as part of its routine update cycle. This change, which was initially scheduled for May 5, 2025, was delayed by a few weeks to allow users additional time to prepare.

List of Affected Phones

As of today, WhatsApp now requires iOS 15.1 or later for iPhones and Android 5.1 or higher for Android devices. As a result, the following phone models will no longer support WhatsApp:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus
  • Galaxy Core
  • Galaxy Express 2

What Affected Smartphone Users Can do

Affected smartphone users can upgrade their device by switching to a newer smartphone supporting iOS 15.1 or Android 5.1 (or later) to ensure continued access to WhatsApp. B

If possible, the iOS of affected Apple devices like the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, or SE (1st gen) should be updated to the iOS 15.8.4 via Settings > General > Software Update to maintain compatibility. Affected users are also advised to backup their chats to iCloud (iPhone) or Google Drive (Android) before losing access to them.
