Dangote Fertilizer Limited (DFL) has announced a strategic partnership with Thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology (UFT) to license advanced UFT Fluid Bed Granulation Technology for four new urea granulation plants in Lekki, Nigeria.
Each unit will have a daily production capacity of 4,235 metric tons, collectively increasing DFL’s output to 16,940 metric tons per day.
This expansion raises Nigeria’s annual urea granule production from roughly 2.65 million tons to over 8 million tons. The new facilities will be located adjacent to DFL’s existing complexes, which have been operational since 2021, producing 3,850 metric tons per day each using the same UFT technology.

The agreement includes the provision of a technology license, a full Process Design Package (PDP), and proprietary equipment such as granulators and scrubbers. The plants will integrate UFT’s energy-efficient scrubbing system to reduce pressure drop and control dust and ammonia emissions, ensuring compliance with strict environmental standards.
Additionally, the facilities will deploy Ammonia Convert Technology (ACT), which incorporates ammonium sulfate byproducts into urea granules. This process eliminates waste streams and provides logistical and commercial advantages.
Nadja Haakansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, commented: “This partnership with Dangote Fertiliser Limited underscores our shared vision for sustainable industrial development and global food security. By deploying our proven UFT® Fluid Bed Granulation Technology, we are setting new standards in efficiency and environmental stewardship in fertilizer production. We are proud to support DFL in building resilient and future-ready value chains.”
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, added: “We are pleased to deepen our collaboration with thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology for the expansion of our fertilizer operations in Lekki. This initiative reflects our commitment to agricultural self-sufficiency and industrial progress across Africa. With UFT technology, we are ensuring the production of high-quality urea fertilizer that meets global standards while reducing environmental impact. This investment further positions Nigeria as a leading fertilizer producer.”
Dangote Fertiliser Limited is one of Africa’s largest fertilizer producers, committed to boosting agricultural productivity and food security across the continent. UFT Fluid Bed Granulation Technology currently accounts for over 70% of global urea granule output, delivering high efficiency while keeping emissions below regulatory limits.
In a related move, Dangote signed a $2.5 billion agreement with the Ethiopian government in August 2025 to build a fertilizer plant in the eastern Somali region. Dangote will hold 60% ownership, with Ethiopian Investment Holdings holding the remaining 40%. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described it as a “landmark for our country’s food security ambitions,” emphasizing job creation and reliable fertilizer supply.
The Lekki expansion reinforces Nigeria’s position as a fertilizer production hub and showcases Dangote’s strategy to integrate sustainability, innovation, and industrial growth. By adopting world-class technology, the company is set to meet both domestic and regional agricultural demands efficiently.
