Biden Races towards 270 Electoral Votes, Trump Closes Gap in Nevada

Published by

As reports roll in from the ongoing United States Presidential Elections, the Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden’s ascent to the presidency appears more and more promising. The former Vice President needs up to 270 Electoral College votes to be declared winner, and he currently has 264 votes to his opponent President Donald Trump’s 214, according to the Associated Press.

With his confidence bolstered by these results, Biden said on Wednesday that “it’s clear that we’re winning enough states to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency”. He launched a presidential transition website in preparation for what his campaign appears to think is his inevitable victory. Even Fox News, notorious for its bias towards President Trump, correctly predicted early on that Biden would win the crucial swing state of Michigan thereby grabbing a total of sixteen electoral votes in one fell swoop.

However, the Democrats might have to pump the brakes on the premature celebrations. The race in many states remains too close to call. An instance is the state of Nevada, which is worth a total of 6 votes. Though Biden is currently in the lead, he is only 7,600 votes ahead of Trump. It is unknown how many ballots are left to be counted in the battleground state. Though the state has been won by the Democrats in every election after 2004, Trump’s aggressive campaign in Nevada this year makes a Republican comeback still possible.

Other states that are still up for grabs are Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Each of these remaining swing states could make or break these elections. So, where do the candidates stand with each state?

Alaska’s result is yet to be called, but early predictions have President Trump carrying the state with 61% of the vote, while Biden had a mere 34.5%. Alaska is a historically Republican state, as both Trump and Mitt Romney won during the previous elections. The state has 3 electoral votes.

Arizona’s results remain to be declared officially, though Biden already has the win according to Fox News and the Associated Press. The remaining votes left to count, even if Trump were to win all of them, would not be enough to help him level up. It is expected that when it is officially announced, the state’s 11 electoral votes will go to Biden.

Georgia’s 16 electoral votes could define the entire elections and both candidates are at war over the key state. Though Trump currently has the lead, reports coming in show Biden closing in as more votes are counted. Trump won over half of the votes in the 2016 elections against Hillary Clinton but risks losing to Biden as his current lead does not appear to hold steady. There are thousands of votes left to count. Thus, calling it for Trump would be premature.

The state of North Carolina offers its winner 15 electoral votes and with 95% of the votes already counted, Trump has the lead at the moment by about 1%.

There are 20 electoral votes up for grabs in the state of Pennsylvania. And the state is currently still in play, with Trump leading with 50.5% of the votes. Coming behind with 48.4% of ballots cast is Vice President Joe Biden. This final state is one of the most important in the entire country. Trump narrowly beat out Hillary Clinton in 2016, clinching 48.18% of the votes while Clinton bagged 47.46%. Interestingly, when Biden ran alongside President Barrack Obama in 2012, the Democratic duo won by a wider margin of 51.97% to Mitt Romney’s 46.59%.
