Legendary Nigerian singer Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Face or 2Baba, has described his hit song African Queen as a “huge blessing” and the song that changed everything for him.
In a recent interview, the award-winning artist acknowledged that African Queen remains his most iconic track, resonating deeply with fans across generations and earning him global acclaim. He however noted, the song also brought its own problems.
When responding to a question on his most legendary song, he said “It’s very obvious — that’s African Queen, everywhere you go.
“That song has been a huge blessing, and it brings me joy every time.”
2Baba, however, emphasized that while African Queen became a turning point in his career, he is equally proud of his other works, many of which also hold special meaning for his listeners. “I’m grateful for everything,” he added. “There are so many other songs I’ve made that are brilliant too, and I know a lot of people resonate with them. Some even love those songs more.”
African Queen and Controversy
Originally released in 2004 as part of his debut solo album Face 2 Face, African Queen catapulted 2Baba to continental fame, cementing his place as one of Africa’s most influential musicians. It was also among the songs that brought Nigerian music to global limelight.
The song has not being without its controversy however. Former bandmate Blackface (of the trio Plantashun Boiz) has repeatedly claimed that he is the sole writer of “African Queen”.
He alleges that 2Baba and their former label took credit for the song while he was not properly recognized, 2Baba however publicly responded by saying the song was a collaboration “I wrote most of the song … but we wrote it together.” He said.
It has also being reported that Blackface and 2Baba reportedly reached a confidential agreement where Blackface was later acknowledged as a co-writer and paid some royalties.
