Professor Mahmood Yakubu has formally handed over leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to May Agbamuche, the body’s longest-serving National Commissioner, as he concludes his two‐term tenure spanning 10 years.
During a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at INEC’s Abuja headquarters, Yakubu urged all commissioners and directors to support Agbamuche until a substantive chairman is appointed.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to nominate a permanent successor, pending Senate confirmation.
Civil society groups, including SERAP, have already called for transparency in the selection process, advocating that the process not be conducted behind closed doors.
