Ahead of World Asthma Day, which is annually commemorated on the 7th of May, a leading Nigerian medical expert has sounded the alarm on the need for greater awareness and understanding of asthma, a condition affecting millions of people worldwide.

Dr. Odia U. Enaholo, a family physician and consultant at Evercare Hospital, on Thursday, May 2, 2024, joined Smooth FM’s ‘Smooth Health: On the Drive’ programme to shed light on this often-misunderstood condition, offering vital guidance to those affected.”

Enaholo, who described asthma as a chronic lung disease, revealed that it affects over 13 million Nigerians and 300 million people worldwide, with children being the most vulnerable.

He highlighted symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness, and emphasized that triggers vary from person to person, including dust, smoke, cold air, and moulds.

According to Enaholo, it is important that patients identify and avoid their triggers, as well as seek a skin or allergy test at the hospital.

Speaking on available remedy, he explained that medications, including nebulizers, inhaled steroids, and bronchodilators can be effective in managing or alleviating asthma symptoms.

Arbiterz understands that Evercare Hospital offers primary care interventions and a specialized unit for diagnosing and administering medicine, with experts in the Pulmonology department available to treat patients of all ages and genders.

Meanwhile, to commemorate World Asthma Day, Evercare Hospital will be holding a ‘Coffee Morning’ on May 7th at 10 a.m., where attendees can receive more information on asthma and receive small tokens such as nebulizers.
