UNILAG Mgt Meets Faculty Presidents-Elect, promises to Adjust fees

Unilag Managements speaks on the correction of fees

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) management on Wednesday met with faculty presidents-elect to address rising concerns over the recent fee adjustments and student welfare issues. The meeting, held on October 29, 2025, lasted nearly two hours and had in attendance the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), the Dean of Students Affairs, representatives of the Communications Unit, and officials from the Security Division.

Fee Discrepancies to Be Corrected

During the meeting, the student leaders and university officials jointly reviewed the new student fees template and discovered discrepancies in charges found on the payment portal. Some fees—including “Accreditation,” “Professional Services,” and “Registration”—reportedly appeared twice or were unclear.

Management assured that these errors would be addressed and corrected. It further stated that any excess payment made by students will be refunded. Students were advised to wait for the updated fee schedule, expected to be released within the week, before making payments.

No Major Increase in Fees, UNILAG Insists

Responding to the widespread perception of a steep fee hike, the management clarified that there had been no significant increment. It explained that recent complaints made to the Ministry of Education and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) prompted a consolidation of all payable fees on the portal, creating the impression of a major review.

The institution noted that the only legitimate adjustments were in utility fees, TISHIP charges, portal maintenance, and other services—attributed to increased costs from third-party providers and efforts to improve student healthcare.

Hostel Balloting on Hold

The Dean of Students Affairs disclosed that hostel balloting is yet to commence because course registration and fee scheduling must be finalized first. A timeline for balloting is expected within the week.

Current accommodation fees remain N80,000 for general hostels, N250,000 for Sodeinde Hall, and N500,000 for the Moremi Hall Extension—although these may be reviewed further, with a caution fee potentially added.

NELFUND Alignment and Student Complaints Channel

Management also assured that efforts are ongoing to synchronize UNILAG’s fee schedule with NELFUND provisions to ensure eligible students benefit fully from the scheme.

Students were reminded to report any unauthorized charges or failure of staff to deliver services covered under approved fees to the Faculty Presidents-elect Council, SERVICOM, Students Affairs Division, or the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor.

Security Advises Calm

The Security Unit appealed to students to remain peaceful while corrections and reviews are underway.

Faculty Presidents-Elect Vow Accountability

The faculty presidents-elect assured students that they would closely monitor all commitments made by management and provide timely updates. They also pledged to hold the institution accountable and urged students to remain calm and avoid misinformation.
