Twitter’s Sweeping Outage Denies Users’ Access All Around The World

Twitter has seen numerous outages across the world, causing users in their millions difficulty in accessing and posting on its website and mobile apps.

The California-based social media giant disclosed on Thursday the hitch was caused by an “inadvertent change we made to our internal systems.” The change spurred crashes throughout the United States evening and Australian morning.

Twitter went down altogether for a couple of minutes and, much as it was swiftly restored online, it was impossible for users including those in the US and the UK to tweet or retweet anything for over an hour.

Many users received an error message telling them Twitter was “overcapacity,” “Tweet failed” or a note saying “Oops, something went wrong.” Both the “mentions” and “notification” feeds were unavailable as well.

The disruption came a couple of months after a major hack of some of Twitter’s biggest accounts including those of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Kim Kardashian West and Jeff Bezos, which according to New York regulators sprang from a tech support scam.

A number of users are witnessing periodic site malfunctioning.

According to Twitter’s official status page, there was “no evidence this outage [was] caused by a security breach or hack. We’re currently investigating internal root causes.”

“The recent issue was caused by an inadvertent change we made to our internal systems. Twitter should be working for everyone within the next few hours.”

The outage happened a day after Twitter took a historic decision of curbing the dissemination of the contentious New York Post feature censorious of the US presidential candidate Joe Biden, triggering fiery reactions among conservatives and a conversation around how social media platforms should address misinformation in the build-up to the U.S. election.

Twitter restrained users from posting links to the story or photos from the unconfirmed report. Those who tried to share the story on the platform received a notice saying: “we can’t complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially harmful.”
