US president Donald Trump is looking to close nearly 30 overseas embassies and consulates as part of a broad overhaul of America’s diplomatic agency.
This is according to an internal State Department document obtained by CNN which states the proposed overhaul is championed by the Elon Musk-backed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
The document recommends closing 10 embassies and 17 consulates especially in Europe and Africa, as well as a couple in Asia and the Caribbean. The affected embassies include those in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan in addition to five consulates in France, two in Germany, two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one in the United Kingdom, one in South Africa and one in South Korea.
The document proposes that the closed embassies’ duties be covered by outposts in neighboring countries.
State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce refused to comment on the issue when approached.
