Tinubu Targets 7% Growth to End Poverty, Says 8.1m Households Got N25,000 Cash Transfers

Arbiterz has obtained an advance copy of a keynote speech to be delivered by the Honourable Minister at the Nextier Development Festival (DevFest) in Abuja on Thursday, where he declared that the Tinubu administration is determined “to be the generation that ends poverty in Nigeria.”

The Minister will say the government’s strategy is anchored on high, sustained, and inclusive growth alongside social protection. He will disclose that 8.11 million households have already received the first tranche of a ₦25,000 cash transfer, part of a programme targeting 15 million households.

“No country has reduced poverty on a large scale without achieving economic growth that outpaces population growth,” the Minister is expected to say. He will add that the administration has set a 7% annual GDP growth target because “poverty will not fall unless opportunity grows faster than our population.”

According to the advance text, Nigeria’s economy has begun to shake off stagnation: “From 2% growth before this administration to above 3% today – Nigeria is moving forward again.”

The speech highlights reforms aimed at restoring stability after years of oil dependence and macroeconomic distortions. Inflation has started to moderate, foreign reserves are rising, and the naira has remained stable for more than a year. “Stability is returning – and stability is the oxygen of growth,” the Minister will say.

New opportunities are being unlocked across sectors. For big investors, projects such as Bonga North and the Ubeta Gas Field are moving forward. For small businesses and farmers, a $1 billion Afreximbank–Bank of Agriculture programme is underway, while Nigeria prepares to host the 2027 Intra-African Trade Fair.

The Minister will conclude by reaffirming that the Tinubu government’s reforms are about creating opportunities for all Nigerians: “Our ultimate reform is opportunity – an economy where every Nigerian can rise. We are determined to be the generation that ends poverty in Nigeria – and we will not relent until that goal is achieved.”
