Tesla is recalling 1.85 million vehicles in the United States due to a potential software failure that could prevent detection of an unlatched hood, the automaker announced.
This issue could cause the hood to open fully while driving, obstructing the driver’s view and significantly increasing the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Software Update and Affected Models
In response to the issue, Tesla began rolling out an over-the-air software update in mid-June to address the problem. The update enhances the software’s ability to detect an open hood and promptly alert drivers.
The recall affects various models, including the 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y. These vehicles are equipped with a hood latch produced in China by Magna Closures Co Ltd.
Investigation and Engineering Studies
Tesla’s investigation began in March after receiving customer complaints about unprompted hood openings in certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China. This led to a latch hardware recovery and in-service vehicle inspections.
Although fewer incidents were reported in Europe and North America, Tesla initiated engineering studies in these regions to inspect hood latch assemblies last month. Based on these findings, the decision to issue a recall was made earlier this month.
Reports and Previous Recalls
Tesla reported three instances of the issue in the United States but confirmed that there have been no crashes or injuries related to the recall. This recall is Tesla’s largest since December, when the company recalled 2.03 million U.S. vehicles to install new safeguards in its Autopilot system. However, following reports of 20 crashes involving vehicles with the new Autopilot update, NHTSA opened a probe, citing “several concerns” about the recall.
Financial Impact
The recall comes at a challenging time for Tesla, which recently posted its worst quarterly profit margin in over five years, highlighting the electric vehicle maker’s struggle to boost auto sales amid a slowdown in demand.
Tesla’s proactive measures in addressing the unlatched hood issue through a recall and software update demonstrate its commitment to safety. However, the recall also shows the ongoing challenges the company faces in maintaining its market position and ensuring the reliability of its advanced technologies.
