Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has awoken from an induced coma following successful surgery to repair a ruptured intestine, a severe abdominal injury sustained during a Premier League match.

The Nigerian footballer underwent the first stage of surgery on Monday, addressing the critical intestinal damage caused by a collision with a goalpost.

On Tuesday, medical staff placed Awoniyi in an induced coma to closely monitor his condition as part of the surgical procedure.

The second phase of the operation, which involved closing the wound, was completed successfully on Wednesday, marking a significant step in his recovery.

BBC Sport reported that Awoniyi has now awakened from the coma, signaling positive progress in his medical treatment.

The incident has garnered widespread sympathy across Nigeria, with prominent figures and fans rallying in support of the resilient athlete.

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed deep concern over Awoniyi’s condition, praising his dedication.

Obi highlighted Awoniyi’s tenacity, noting that despite the severe injury, the striker continued playing, embodying the unyielding Nigerian spirit.

He urged Nigerians to unite in solidarity with Awoniyi and his family during this challenging time, emphasizing the importance of celebrating such talents.

Obi also expressed hope for Awoniyi’s full recovery, wishing for the footballer to return to the pitch stronger than ever.

Nigerian photojournalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel, known as OgaNlaMedia, provided an encouraging update on Awoniyi’s condition.

Samuel revealed that he spoke with a family member who confirmed Awoniyi is recovering well and responding positively to treatment.

Awoniyi’s wife is by his side, offering support as he continues to stabilize, with hopes that he will soon be able to communicate.

Nottingham Forest has yet to release an official statement on Awoniyi’s recovery timeline or his potential return to the Premier League.

Awoniyi’s injury has sparked discussions about player safety and the need for enhanced medical protocols during matches.

The Nigerian football community continues to monitor Awoniyi’s progress, with social media platforms abuzz with messages of encouragement.

His recovery journey is expected to inspire many, highlighting the resilience and determination that define his career.
