A Google for startups initiative giving access to funding to Black-founded startups in Africa. Through the Google for startups Black Founders Fund Africa, Google is supporting early-stage, Black-founded startups on the continent. Google want to bridge the existing fundraising gap for Black startup founders in Africa’s fast-growing technology landscape. Founders will receive up to $110K in equity-free cash, up to an additional $200K in Google Cloud Credits, and access to the best of Google-people, products, and practices.
Eligibility Requirements
Startups must be:
- Headquartered in Africa or has a legal presence on the continent
- Building for Africa and a global market
- Creating jobs, able to show growth potential to raise more funding, and making an impact
With a founding team that is:
- Diverse, with at least one Black C-level founding member
- Directly supporting the Black community
Technical requirements:
- Technology startups with a live product in-market or a business where technology is core to their ability to scale (the initiative is not for consultancies or not-for-profits)
- Compatibility with Google products – our products can accelerate your growth
Benefits
- Access to capital: Up to $100K in equity-free cash will be awarded to each startup. Each startup will receive either $50,000 or $100,000. Funding varies according to each startup’s product development stage, current needs, and how much they have already raised.

- 2023 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Innovation in Engineering (£500,000 Prize)
The QEPrize seeks nominations from the public that celebrate a wide variety of engineering innovations across all sectors of the of the profession, and a breadth of nominations from all corners of the globe. The £500,000 prize is the world’s most prestigious engineering accolade, awarded to up to five engineers responsible for a bold, groundbreaking engineering innovation of global benefit to humanity.
Eligibility
Entry to the Prize is open to:
- Any individual (or not more than five living individuals working as a team);
- Of any nationality;
- Who is personally responsible for a ground-breaking innovation in engineering which has been of global benefit to humanity. Self-nomination is not permitted.
- The Trustees reserve the right to reject any nomination where, in their reasonable opinion, there is or is likely to be a conflict of interest between the nominees, nominators or any referees and any other nomination or the Prize more generally.
The Prize
The winners will be awarded:
- A total cash prize of £500,000 (five hundred thousand GBP); and
- Appropriate memorabilia to be decided by the Trustees in their sole discretion (the “Prize”). In the event that the Prize is received by more than one individual (but not more than five individuals, as above) collaborating under a single nomination, the Prize money will be shared between the winners as determined by the Trustees in their sole discretion on the advice of the Judging Panel.

- Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leaders Program 2022 (Fully Funded to Marrakesh, Morocco)
The Policy Center for the New South (PCNS) is organizing the 11th edition of the Atlantic Dialogues Conference, a high-level conference convening influential public and private sectors leaders from around the Atlantic Basin for open, informal discussion on cress-regional issues.
The ADEL program is PCNS’s flagship young professionals program, held two days prior to the Atlantic Dialogues conference. Every year, this program brings together 30 to 50 young leaders from around the Atlantic basin and Africa. These rising leaders have displayed leadership capabilities, and have a strong sense of commitment to social and economic issues facing their communities in particular and the world in general. In 2022, 30 young professionals will be selected to participate in the 2022 Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leaders Program.
The ADEL program will be held from December 11-14, 2022 in Marrakech, Morocco. The Emerging Leaders will then join the Atlantic Dialogues Conference from December 14th to 16th.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be between the ages of 25 and 35 (included) on May 13th, the day the applications for the program open.
- Applicants must be citizens of countries located in Africa, North America, South America, Central America, Europe or the Caribbean – citizens of the countries bordering the Atlantic Basin will be given priority. Also eligible are applicants who are citizens from other countries who have residency in countries of the regions listed above.
- Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English in their personal statement and short video.
- Applicants must guarantee their availability for the full duration of this six-day program, which will take place from December 11th to 16th, in Marrakesh, Morocco.

- For the 30 selected participants, the PCNS will cover economy class airfare to and from Morocco. In addition, local transportation, catering, and hotel accommodation during the dates of the program and conference will be covered by the conference organizers.

- TWAS-Lenovo Science Prize 2022 for Scientists from Developing Countries (USD$100,000 Prize)
The TWAS-Lenovo Science Award is one of the most prestigious honours given to scientists from the developing world. The TWAS-Lenovo Science Award carries a monetary award of USD100,000 provided by Lenovo, as well as a medal and a certificate highlighting the recipient’s major contributions to science. The award is presented to the recipient at a special ceremony arranged by TWAS.
In 2022, the award will be given to an individual in recognition of his/her pioneering achievements in social and economic sciences that have direct impact on crosscutting SDGs and intersectionality, including but not limited to:
- Poverty and hunger reduction (including food and nutrition security)
- Inequalities (including gender inequities and gender violence)
- Quality education (including inclusive education and teacher education)
- Health (including mental health, well-being and pandemics)
- Climate change (including adaptation/resilience and climate financing)
- Clean energy and safe drinking water
Candidates must be nationals of a developing country, living and working in the Global South for at least the last 10 years. The award will only be conferred to an individual for scientific research in social and economic sciences of outstanding international merit carried out at institutions in developing countries. Self-nominations and nominations from jury members will not be accepted. Fellows of TWAS are eligible for the TWAS-Lenovo Science Award.

- Idea Lab Incubator Program 2022 for Social Entrepreneurs
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is now accepting applications from aspiring social entrepreneurs worldwide for the first round of its Idea Lab Incubator, a new program that extends the reach of the ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) hardware accelerator platform. Idea Lab is open to individuals and teams who have identified a pressing social and/or environmental challenge they think could be addressed through a hardware-led innovation. Applicants can submit either an engineering problem statement or a conceptual hardware solution that, once developed and scaled, will have a positive impact on vulnerable populations.

- Entrepreneurs, academics, engineers, designers, students, hobbyists, and others with an innovative mindset, passion for solving urgent problems, and willingness to learn and are encouraged to apply for this customized learning and mentoring opportunity.

Applications are now open for the Big Tech & Society Media Fellowship 2022. The Big Tech & Society Media Fellowship offers journalists and media professionals the opportunity to pursue deeply researched, investigative log-form projects in print and audio on issues at the intersection of technology, policy, and economy. Specifically, they are looking to support work that is focused on the Global South, which surfaces strong regional local narratives of technology, capitalism, policy, and development from Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America, and integrates economic and gender justice concerns.

- UN Women: Open Call for Advance Women’s Political Participation in Nigeria

- 2022 Grant to support Mother-Child and Pediatric Health in Africa
The Madiro has launched its annual round of grants to support initiatives aimed at improving health. These grants will fund organizations who work to meet the health needs of unserved or underserved communities on the African continent. Projects must focus on mother-child health and/or pediatric health. Successful projects should showcase a direct positive impact on the physical and/or mental health of the organization’s beneficiaries.
