“Expect Generational Curses on Biden” – Nigerian Trumpists Back Voter Fraud Claims in Unique Fashion

President Trump’s actions are bringing to mind the antics of the former Nigerian dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, after he annulled the 1993 June 12 elections …But surprisingly, there is a vast group of Nigerian Trump supporters who passionately back his unfounded claims that the November elections was rigged by the Democrats.

President Donald Trump is slowly but steadily losing support even in the Republican Party after refusing to concede the November 3 elections. Republican Senators Susan Collins and Pat Toomey are publicly pushing back against his campaign to challenge election results.  Perhaps his most devoted media pundit, Ben Shapiro, has described him as “deeply irresponsible”.

President Trump’s actions are bringing to mind the antics of the former Nigerian dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, after he annulled the 1993 June 12 elections in yet another bid to extend his illegal stay in office. Trump has fired the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Chris Krebs, after Krebs pointed out that there “is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.” Part of the agency’s remit is to safeguard the electoral system.

But surprisingly, there is a vast group of Nigerian Trump supporters who passionately back his unfounded claims that the November elections was rigged by the Democrats. Since the November 3 elections, they have taken to social media to express their support for him and joined Donald Trump in attacking media organisations and government agencies who insist there are no grounds to doubt the integrity of the elections. Nigerian Trumpists merely quote Trump’s assertations that the election was rigged rather than make any effort at any form of fact-checking whatsoever.

A particularly enraged supporter, Ejogno Okai, declared on Facebook, “Expect generational curses on Joe Biden like here. Rigging of an election is the highest crime against humanity.”

Vincent Obi echoed the sentiment claiming, “This is the [Democrats] in America talking rubbish. Even the whole world knows that the election was fraudulent.”

Trump’s Nigerian supporters parrot the American President’s claims that the media is biased against him. Macdonald Ekeke hopes Trump “will come out victorious irrespective of the media ganging up against him.”

Kingsley Nkwuda wrote, “Actually Trump won the election. Because [Barack] Obama and Joe Biden want to control Americans through China, they rigged the election.”

Some also see Trump’s loss in apocalyptic terms. Akataka Nwoke-Ike noted that “If America allows Biden with this unimaginable fraud, it means America is gone forever.”

Another Trump supporter, Skill Chriss wrote, “They wanted to play a fast one on [him]. But [he] caught them in the game. [He] now has the dice, [he] can throw it and have a double six.”

Maverick Nigerian politician Femi Fani-Kayode would emerge the grand patron of Nigerians-for-Trump if such a political action committee (PAC) is ever formed.  Responding to a tweet by Trump [the content of the tweet was flagged as false by Twitter], Fani-Kayode wrote, “You are not alone Mr. President: millions all over the world are with you. We are all proud and strong Trumpians and we are also sons and daughters of the Living God. He will never let us be ashamed!”

Earlier this month, the world’s attention was drawn to the Nigerian base of apparent Trump supporters when a viral clip showed a group of Nigerians holding a rally in his honor. They are not an insignificant part of the population; a Pew Research finding showed 58% of Nigerians have confidence in Trump to “do the right thing” regarding world affairs.

Trump’s loss to Biden in the United States presidential elections made him only the eleventh incumbent to lose a re-election bid for the presidency in the office’s 231-year history. He is also the first president not to get reelected in nearly thirty years, since Bill Clinton ousted George HW Bush in 1992.

Even before the winner was declared, Trump spent the final days of the election disputing its legitimacy, as results from multiple states showed he was behind the former vice-president. When the total results did come, he maintained his position that the election was rigged. As recently as yesterday, he tweeted “…And I won the election. Voter fraud all over the country!”

Many of Trump’s posts about the elections are flagged by Twitter as false, with the disclaimer “This claim about election fraud is disputed” appearing under his tweets.

As we previously reported, experts such as Barry Richard [former George W. Bush attorney] have described Trump’s legal case as hopeless. It is not expected that any court would entertain the idea of recounts in the key states which delivered the election to Vice President Biden—Biden won the popular vote by a clear margin of over five million and clinched a total of 306 Electoral College votes, far beyond the required 270 threshold. Still, Trump’s insistence, without clear evidence, that his loss can be blamed on voter fraud has gained the backing of his Nigerian supporters.

Dr. Femi Adebajo explained that Nigerian Trump supporters are “deeply ignorant” about the American President. According to Adebajo, a consultant psychiatrist with the United Kingdom’s National Health Service, Trump’s popularity is also explained by the fact that “Many Nigerians are deeply amoral and capricious when it comes to material things. They see Donald Trump’s vulgar buccaneering as admirable because ‘the end justifies the means”.
